The Atlanta Braves acquired All-Star closer Shane Greene from the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Joey Wentz and outfield prospect Travis Demeritte.

Greene, one of the most coveted relief arms on the market this summer, is in the midst of his finest MLB season. The 30-year-old owns a 1.18 ERA and 0.87 WHIP along with 22 saves and 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 38 games for the Tigers.

He's earning $4 million this season and has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining.

Greene will now be counted on to boost an Atlanta bullpen that entered Wednesday as the worst relief unit in baseball with a combined minus-0.6 WAR this season. Atlanta also acquired veteran reliever Mark Melancon from the San Francisco Giants before the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Wentz was the Braves' No. 7 prospect at the time of the trade, according to MLB Pipeline. The 21-year-old owns a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts in 20 starts at Double-A Mississippi this year.

Demeritte, 24, owns a .286/.387/.558 slash line with 20 homers, 74 RBIs, and four steals over 399 plate appearances with Triple-A Gwinnett in 2019. He was not ranked among the Braves' top 30 prospects.
