Blue Jays trade Sogard to Rays
Eric Sogard didn't have to travel far to join his new team.
During Sunday afternoon's contest between the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays, the Blue Jays sent Sogard to the Rays in exchange for two players to be named later, the teams announced.
Sogard was initially scheduled to play on Sunday but was scratched before the game began. After news of the trade broke, he was seen receiving well wishes from players on Toronto's bench.
"It was an interesting scenario. I was thinking, 'what team I should be cheering for?' in a way," Sogard said, according to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun. "These last two games were absolutely wild games and to come out even, both with seven-run deficit comebacks, was very impressive."
The 33-year-old signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays in December, but was a revelation after his promotion to the bigs early in the season. Overall, Sogard hit .300/.363/.477 with 17 doubles and 30 RBIs across 73 games for Toronto.
Sogard played five different positions for Toronto this season and should fill a similar super-utility role with Tampa Bay.
The Chicago Cubs also tried to acquire Sogard from the Blue Jays - even offering a player that interested Toronto - but they preferred Tampa's return, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
