The New York Mets have reportedly shifted their focus to dealing right-hander Noah Syndergaard ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

"They are definitely trading Syndergaard," an executive who has communicated with the Mets told Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Another source told Sherman no deal was imminent as of Friday.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen is "working very hard" on getting the most he can in return for the 26-year-old, a separate executive told Sherman.

Syndergaard is having a down year, but he's been one of MLB's top pitchers since debuting in 2015.

Noah Syndergaard's career stats

YEAR IP ERA WHIP SO WAR
2015 150 3.24 1.05 166 2.8
2016 183.2 2.60 1.15 218 5.9
2017 30.1 2.97 1.06 34 1.4
2018 154.1 3.03 1.21 155 4.2
2019 126.2 4.33 1.26 126 2.7

The Mets are reportedly seeking a package for Syndergaard that includes a starter who could immediately go into their rotation, and a few top prospects. The team wants to be overwhelmed by a proposal, Sherman adds.

"If they get what they want I think they will do this," a team interested in acquiring Syndergaard told Sherman. "One thing they clearly are doing is not rebuilding with or without Syndergaard. They only do this if they think it is a way to be more competitive next year by getting more depth or more prospect collateral. This would not be a pure prospect trade."

The Houston Astros have actively been pursuing Syndergaard. However, the Mets believe only the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres, two teams reportedly interested in acquiring Thor, have deep enough farm systems to obtain him, according to Sherman.
