MLS playoffs set after hectic Decision Day finale
The stage is now set.
Sunday's frenzied final matchday has determined the dozen sides set to usurp Toronto FC for Major League Soccer honors.
In the Eastern Conference, the New York Red Bulls vaulted Atlanta United on the last day to claim the Supporters' Shield with a single-season record 71 points. Beneath them, are New York City FC and D.C. United, respectively. NYCFC will face the Philadelphia Union, while the Columbus Crew are set to face Wayne Rooney and Co. in the knockout round.
The Western Conference bracket also provides a pair of tantalizing matchups.
Two-time defending Western Conference champions Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City will have a bye in the first round. MLS newcomers Los Angeles FC will square off at home against Real Salt Lake while FC Dallas hosts the Portland Timbers. Real Salt Lake narrowly edged LAFC's El Trafico rival, the LA Galaxy, to grab the conference's sixth and final playoff spot.
