Super-agent Scott Boras helped now-retired outfielder Jayson Werth sign a lucrative seven-year, $126-million contract with the Washington Nationals following the 2010 season. However, despite Boras' role in making Werth a very rich man, the two apparently ended their relationship on bitter terms.

Werth was one of many aging free agents to not sign a deal this winter. He had to wait until March 27 - two days before Opening Day - to ink a minor-league deal with the Seattle Mariners.

"I had offers in November," Werth told 94 WIP sports radio's Howard Eskin, according to the Washington Post's Chelsea Janes. "And I was advised by my former agent to wait. Ill-advised, I guess."

Still at home without a job midway through spring training, an impatient Werth decided to do some self-recruiting, calling 29 of baseball's 30 teams and asking them for a job.

"Spring training came and went, and about halfway through spring training, I felt like I had been working all winter, I was ready to play. So I took matters into my own hands and I called every team (but one), and tried to get a job," Werth said. "The only team I didn't call? The Mets. I wouldn't play for them."

While making those calls to general managers and skippers located outside of Queens, Werth made a discovery that eventually led to his split with Boras.

"Some guys were surprised that I wanted to play, which was surprising because I wanted to play. I let my agent know that I wanted to play. They said they hadn't heard from him, hadn't heard from me, just didn't know I was available," Werth said. "That's one of the reasons why I'm no longer with that agent."

Werth would eventually call it quits after playing in 36 games with the Mariners' Triple-A team, putting a bow on a stellar 15-year big league career.
