The J.D. Martinez free-agent saga just got a little more interesting.

Martinez's agent Scott Boras met with Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick within the past week to discuss his client, reports The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

The two sides are fond of each other, but there are still questions about whether they can find common ground, Rosenthal adds.

This isn't the first time Boras and Kendrick have discussed Martinez, either, as the two met earlier this offseason to speak about the slugger, according to Rosenthal.

Arizona is reportedly willing to offer more than $100 million over five years to the 30-year-old Martinez, who was sensational for the Diamondbacks down the stretch after being acquired in a July trade. In 62 games with Arizona, Martinez hit .302/.366/.741 with 29 home runs and 65 RBIs.

But, the Diamondbacks have competition for Martinez's services in the form of the Boston Red Sox, who've apparently made their own offer of $110 million over five years.

Until recently, the Red Sox appeared to be the front-runners for Martinez, but a report surfaced - and was later refuted by Boras - that the power-hitting outfielder was fed up with Boston's inflexibility when it came to their offer.

Martinez remains the top run-producer available on the open market and reportedly is willing to hold out into spring training to secure a deal of his liking.

Over the course of his seven-year career, the one-time All-Star owns a .285/.342/.514 slash line with 152 home runs and 476 RBIs.
