The New York Yankees will take a step to enhance fan safety at both Yankee Stadium and George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., ahead of the 2018 season. The team announced its plans to expand the protective netting at both facilities during the offseason.

The announcement comes 11 days after a young fan was struck by a Todd Frazier foul ball, and was then taken to the hospital for their injuries.

The current netting technically meets Major League Baseball's recommended guidelines, and the expansion will go beyond them.

Several teams have already committed to extra netting going forward to ensure greater safety, and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has likewise announced an increased effort on the part of the league to protect ticketholders sitting close to the action.
