Manchester United is set to open talks with David De Gea over the next few weeks to negotiate a new contract in an attempt to both secure the future of the team's first-choice goalkeeper and ward off renewed interest from Real Madrid, reports Miguel Delaney of the Independent.

De Gea, 26, nearly made the switch to Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 but a miscue with a fax machine scuppered the deal and the Spain international has since doubled down on his commitment to the Red Devils' cause.

His contract runs until 2019 and De Gea is reportedly happy with life under Jose Mourinho.

Delaney adds United have been insistent that De Gea won't be sold, and Mourinho wishes to have his No. 1 shot-stopper locked down come the new year.

Having kept 80 clean sheets in 206 Premier League appearances, it's not hard to understand why.
