Hours after Europe's football governing body, UEFA, announced plans to launch a formal investigation into Paris Saint-Germain's transfer practices, the Ligue 1 giant responded, saying it's "surprised" by the inquiry.

PSG released a statement of its own, saying, "Paris Saint-Germain acknowledges the decision of the UEFA Financial Fair Play panel to immediately ensure that the Paris club's accounts as of 30 June 2018 comply with the Financial Fair Play criteria for the 2017-2018 season."

With UEFA set to examine PSG's finance in connection with FFP stipulations that require a club's expenditures on transfer fees and wages balance with annual revenues, the capital club adds it's confident the signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have been done by the book.

"The Club is surprised by this approach given that it has constantly kept the UEFA Financial Fair Play teams informed about the financial of the impact of all player operations carried out this summer, even though it wasn't obliged to do so. The Club is very confident in its ability to demonstrate that it will fully comply with Fair Play financial rules for fiscal year 2017-2018."

UEFA's statement conceded that investigators "will regularly meet in order to carefully evaluate all documentation pertaining to this case."

PSG is adamant in its innocence, adding, "In the interests of dialogue and transparency, the Club will continue its exchanges with UEFA in the coming days and will respond, as it always has done, to each of the questions raised by the European body."
