Cespedes done for season with strained hamstring

The New York Mets announced Monday that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has been shut down for the remainder of the 2017 season due to a right hamstring strain.

An MRI done on Cespedes' injured hamstring taken Monday in New York confirmed the initial diagnosis.

Cespedes suffered the injury while running the bases in the first inning of Friday's game. After limping into home plate to score a run, the Cuban had to be helped back to the dugout.

In the immediate aftermath of the injury general manager Sandy Alderson indicated that it was likely a season-ending ailment for the 31-year-old. The estimated recovery time of six weeks is likely not enough time to get a healthy Cespedes back on the field before the season is over.

Cespedes, who signed a four-year, $110-million deal to remain in Queens long term during this past offseason, finishes his 2017 season having hit .292/.352/.540 with 17 homers, 17 doubles, 46 runs scored, 26 walks, and 42 RBIs over just 81 games for the lowly Mets.

Cespedes also spent a significant portion of the season's early months on the disabled list due to another hamstring problem.
