One way or another, Manchester City will break the world record fee for a defender.

Exactly a week after luring Kyle Walker to the Etihad for a reported £50-million fee that matches David Luiz's move to Paris Saint-Germain, and the club is reportedly in the final stages of a €57.5-million (£51.6M) move for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy.

L'Equipe's Hugo Delom adds that this is City's fourth bid for the 23-year-old France international with the latest offer convincing Les Monesgasgues vice-president Vadim Vasilyev to sell Mendy.

Considering the shrewd Vasilyev plucked Mendy from Marseille last summer for a modest €13 million, a sale of the four-time capped international represents a massive profit. Pair that with the January signing of promising Brazilian left-back Jorge from Flamengo, and it's a move consistent with the club's ethos that makes sense for the Ligue 1 holder.

For City, regardless of the fee, it might make even more sense considering the dearth of full-back options at Pep Guardiola's disposal. Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna, and Gael Clichy all left the club earlier in the summer, prompting City's interest in Walker, Mendy, and Dani Alves.

Alves opted instead for Paris Saint-Germain, but City won't let that happen twice, with Ligue 1 Team of the Year member Mendy set to call the Etihad home, joining Walker, former Monaco teammate Bernardo Silva, and shot-stopper Ederson as the club's marquee summer signings.
