Walker joins Manchester City from Tottenham for reported £50M fee

Manchester City has finalised its third significant signing of the summer, luring right-back Kyle Walker to the Etihad Stadium from Tottenham for a reported £50-million fee.

That amount would equal what Paris Saint-Germain paid Chelsea for David Luiz in 2014, marking the costliest transfer fee for a defender.

City announced the deal with a statement on its website Friday, adding that Walker has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the club and will sport the No. 2 kit. The remaining terms of the move were not confirmed by either party, though BBC Sport reports Walker moves for £45 million with £5 million in add-ons.

"I am thrilled to be signing for City and can't wait to get started," Walker said Friday. "Pep Guardiola is one of the most respected managers in the world and I feel he can help me take my game to a new level."

One of the transfer window's worst kept secrets, Walker's Lancashire switch had dominated English headlines as the two parties reportedly haggled over a fee.

With speculation suggesting a falling-out between Walker and Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, the writing was on the wall, though with a dearth of full-backs at City worsened by Dani Alves' decision to opt for Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham had some leverage in the matter.

And that leverage has proved profitable for the reigning Premier League runner-up, which pocket a reported £50-million fee for the 27-year-old full-back with 27 England caps.

City still faces a shortage of full-backs, and with reports suggesting the club is monitoring Monaco star Benjamin Mendy, Guardiola's lot may need to smash the world-record fee for a defender to bring the player five years Walker's junior to the Premier League.
