Report: Brewers among 6 teams interested in Mets' Reed

Jeff Curry / USA TODAY Sports

The market for New York Mets closer Addison Reed appears to be heating up, as the Milwaukee Brewers are one of six teams that have reached out to the Flushing side about the reliever, a source told Newsday's Marcus Villagran.

Reed has put together a solid season after inheriting the Mets' closer job when Jeurys Familia landed on the disabled list. He's recorded 16 saves in 18 opportunities while sporting a 2.40 ERA in 45 innings this year; since June 1, he's been one of the better relievers in the game, owning a 1.04 ERA while holding opponents to a .212 average.

Reed is earning $7.75 million this season, and is set to enter free agency this winter.

Milwaukee, whose NL Central lead was trimmed to just 1 1/2 games after play Wednesday, already owns an All-Star closer in Corey Knebel. The team has primarily been connected to controllable starting pitching on the trade market, but adding Reed would give manager Craig Counsell some depth in an area that's been rather ordinary outside of Knebel's ninth-inning work.

Knebel is the only Brewers reliever with at least 25 innings pitched who owns a sub-3.00 ERA, an ERA+ above 200, and a WHIP below 1.22 this year.

A report earlier this week suggested the New York Yankees have interest in acquiring Reed from their crosstown rivals.
