Report: Yankees scouted Mets' Duda on Monday

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees' desperate search for a first baseman has apparently led them all the way across the Triborough Bridge.

According to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post and CBS New York, the Bronx Bombers were reportedly scouting the Mets' Lucas Duda on Monday night at Citi Field.

It's not clear if any trade talks have taken place between the crosstown rivals who rarely, if ever, make deals with one another.

The Yankees and Mets have completed just five player-for-player trades together since 1990. The most recent one happened some 13 years ago, when Felix Heredia was sent from the Bronx to Queens for Mike Stanton.

While the Yankees are trying to halt their current slide and stay in the AL East race, it's been a very different story for the Mets. After dropping Monday's contest to the Cardinals (despite a 2-for-4 performance from Duda that included his 16th home run) the Mets now sit more than 10 games back of a playoff spot, spurring thoughts of a Flushing fire sale.

Over in the Bronx, the Yankees are still dealing with a black hole at first base thanks to injuries and mediocre performance. The club has used a total of nine different players at the position this season, to mostly disappointing results.

While general manager Brian Cashman previously stated that his team would only be "careful buyers" at the deadline, the immediate need at first base may have caused him to change his stance. In addition to the apparent interest in Duda, it was reported Tuesday that the Yankees are having discussions with the Athletics about 2017 All-Star Yonder Alonso.

Despite spending three weeks on the disabled list in April, Duda has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets this season, hitting .248/.355/.550 with 16 homers and a wRC+ of 135 across 66 games. The 31-year-old will be a free agent at season's end.
