Crystal Palace outcast Mandanda secures Marseille return

The Premier League isn't for everyone.

For proof, look no further than famed French shot-stopper Steve Mandanda, who on Tuesday returned to Marseille after a disastrous debut campaign in England's top flight with Crystal Palace.

Olympique revealed the news with a statement on its website, adding that Mandanda has agreed to a three-year deal with the club for which he made 300 appearances before joining the Croydon side on a free transfer. Marseille did not disclose the fee paid for Mandanda.

Four times voted Ligue 1's Goalkeeper of the Year (2008, 2011, 2015, 2016), Mandanda's move to Palace initially appeared like a no-brainer, as many thought the 32-year-old would take the first-choice duties from Wayne Hennessey. Not so much, as Mandanda started just nine matches - and none since November - and the 24-time capped France international was deemed surplus to requirements by Eagles boss Sam Allardyce.

Mandanda now becomes Marseille's latest shrewd investment, joining the additions of Luis Gustavo and Valere Germain at the Stade Velodrome. Florian Thauvin also agreed to a permanent move and the club is reportedly close to signing Adil Rami from Sevilla.
