Reds place surging Cozart on DL with quad strain
Zack Cozart's career season has hit a sudden snag, as the Cincinnati Reds placed their shortstop on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a strained right quadriceps. The move is retroactive to Sunday.
Cincinnati also placed veteran right-hander Bronson Arroyo on the DL with a shoulder strain. The team recalled outfielder Jesse Winker from Triple-A Louisville and right-hander Ariel Hernandez from Double-A Pensacola in a pair of corresponding moves.
Cozart missed three games last week due to the quad issue, but did play twice over the weekend against Los Angeles. He sat out Sunday's contest due to the ailment, however, leading to Monday's retroactive move.
The injury derails a breakout campaign for the 31-year-old, who had never been known for his skills with the bat prior to this year. Cozart owns a .320/.404/.562 slash line with nine homers and 30 extra-base hits, while walking at a career-best rate of 12.5 percent. He leads all big-league shortstops in slugging percentage, Wins Above Replacement (2.8), and wRC+ (149).
By comparison, Arroyo's transfer to the DL is not a surprise given he revealed that he's been pitching through "some tears" in his shoulder after allowing five earned runs in three innings Sunday.

The 40-year-old made a comeback with the Reds this season after missing two full years due to Tommy John surgery. Although he's made all of his 14 starts to date, Arroyo owns a 7.35 ERA and 6.96 FIP, while leading all pitchers in home runs allowed (23) and earned runs allowed (58).
This is only the second time Arroyo has landed on the DL in his 16-year career.
