Carr will play out current deal if extension not reached by training camp

With Derek Carr reportedly becoming frustrated with the pace of extension talks, the Oakland Raiders quarterback is setting a training-camp deadline to sign a long-term deal or else he will play out his current contract.

"I wouldn't even answer my phone," Carr told media Tuesday, according to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Journal-Review. "The money isn't the thing that drives. If it was, then I shouldn't be standing here. What drives me is making sure I'm giving everything I have in my abilities and making sure that we win.

"I don't want anything distracting my thought process at all. It's not a jab or anything like that. That's just me saying, 'I'm not going to deal with anything that's not helping me focusing on winning.'"

Carr is concerned his contract negotiations would be too much of a distraction once the season begins. He made similar comments in April, hoping that he would wrap up negotiations after the draft, but has since reportedly become unhappy with how things have gone between his representatives and the team.

The 26-year-old is entering the final season of his rookie contract. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of his last two seasons and is expected to earn one of the top salaries in the league on his next deal.

Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie has been adamant that the team wants to get a deal done as bad as Carr, mentioning in mid-May that he wants his quarterback to be "a Raider for life."
