How Kaepernick's numbers stand up against the 22 QBs signed this offseason

Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned, but you knew that.

It has been 70 days since free agency opened and a total of 22 quarterbacks have been signed, none of them Kaepernick.

Over the past two-plus months, a litany of reasonings have been tossed around. Exorbitant contract demands. The desire to be a No. 1 quarterback. Backlash from his national-anthem protest. Eroding skills.

However, the fact remains Kaepernick is a 29-year-old quarterback with 58 starts to his credit, and appearances in two NFC title games and one Super Bowl.

Here are how his numbers stack up against the quarterbacks deemed worthy of a deal this offseason:

Kaepernick vs. Mike Glennon

2016

Player  Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Glennon 0 0 75 1 0 90% 125.4

Career

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Glennon 18 5 4100 30 15 59% 84.6

Kaepernick, who began the year recovering from offseason surgeries, took the starting job from Blaine Gabbert after five games. He wasn't any more effective, as he steered the 49ers to just one win in 11 games, but he wasn't exactly blessed with the most talented supporting cast.

Glennon spent the year backing up Jameis Winston. However, two capable seasons as a starter in 2013 and 2014 earned him a three-year, $45-million contract.

Kaepernick vs. Josh McCown

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick  11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
McCown 3 0 1100 6 6 54% 72.3

Career

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick  58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
McCown 60 18 14242 79 69 59% 78.2

Though McCown has played in eight more seasons than Kaepernick, the two pivots own comparable career stats. Kap has 10 more wins on his ledger and a better touchdown-to-interception ratio. Yet, McCown is touted as a steady-handed veteran while Kaepernick is viewed as a dual-threat quarterback. The Jets inked McCown to a one-year, $6-million deal.

Kaepernick vs. Brian Hoyer

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick  11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Hoyer 5 1 1445 6 0 67% 98.0

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Hoyer 31 16 8608 44 26 59% 84.8

Hoyer turned in an excellent season in his limited time on the field in 2016. As a result, he has supplanted Kaepernick as the starting quarterback of the 49ers. He also earned an annual salary of $6 million, over two seasons.

Kaepernick vs. EJ Manuel

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Manuel 1 0 131 0 0 42% 58.3

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Manuel 17 6 3502 19 15 58% 77.5

Manuel, a career backup, was signed by the Raiders as insurance after the team lost Derek Carr to a broken leg late last year. He likely slots in as No. 3 on the depth chart, for $800,000.

Kaepernick vs. Garrett Gilbert

2016

Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Gilbert 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Gilbert 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Though he was signed to a $465,000 contract, Gilbert - a 2014, sixth-round pick - will have to fight for a roster spot, as Kaepernick continues to do.

Kaepernick vs. Landry Jones

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Jones 2 1 558 4 2 61% 86.3

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Jones 4 2 1071 7 6 60% 82.8

Ben Roethlisberger's primary backup for the past two seasons, Jones was brought back on a two-year, $4.4-million deal after he proved a competent stand in for when Big Ben is felled by injury.

Kaepernick vs. Kellen Clemens

2016

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Clemens 21 8 4017 16 20 54% 69.4

Clemens is a career backup with 12 years of NFL service. At the age of 33, he was given a one-year, $1.08-million contract to back up the Chargers' Philip Rivers.

Kaepernick vs. Matt Cassel

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Cassel 1 1 284 2 2 58% 71.0

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Cassel 80 36 17287 103 79 58% 79.2

Cassel has bounced around the league for 13 seasons. After spending one year as Marcus Mariota's primary backup, he was given $5.25 million to return to the Titans for two more years.

Kaepernick vs. Nick Foles

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Foles 1 1 410 3 0 65% 105.9

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Foles 36 20 9215 56 27 60% 88.1

Foles' fall from grace was a precipitous one. After four seasons, he's been rendered a No. 2 quarterback. One deserving of an $11-million contract with the Eagles, however.

Kaepernick vs. Geno Smith

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Smith 1 1 126 1 1 57% 81.2

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Smith 30 12 5962 28 36 57% 72.4

Smith flamed out with the Jets, yet the Giants elected to keep him in New York to back up Eli Manning. With his one-year, $1.2-million deal, the Giants announced Smith's baggage, and bad play, is less cumbersome than Kaepernick's.

Kaepernick vs. Kellen Moore

2016

Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Moore 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Moore 2 0 779 4 6 58% 71.0

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was never going to consider Kaepernick as an option for Dallas. Instead, he brought back the unproven Moore at a mere $775,000. After a year rife with QB controversy, the Cowboys could do without the headaches.

Kaepernick vs. Chase Daniel

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Daniel 0 0 16 0 0 100% 118.8

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Daniel 2 1 480 1 1 65% 81.1

Daniel signed with his third team in as many seasons to be Drew Brees' primary backup in New Orleans. Despite eight seasons of experience, he's seen very limited action. He made millions of dollars in his last two deals, but agreed to a one-year, $900,000 pact with the Saints.

Kaepernick vs. Mark Sanchez

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Sanchez 0 0 93 0 2 55% 30.3

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Sanchez 72 37 15219 86 86 56% 73.9

Sanchez probably thought he had the Bears' backup job sewn up, with an outside shot at some starts, when he signed with Chicago. Now, with Mitch Trubisky in tow, he's a $2-million backup.

Kaepernick vs. Matt Barkley

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Barkley 6 1 1611 8 14 59% 68.3

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Barkley 6 1 1911 8 18 59% 63.7

Barkley was given his first chance to start last season and the results were poor. Nonetheless, San Francisco gave him a two-year, $4-million contract to be their backup.

Kaepernick vs. Josh Johnson

Johnson 5 0 1042 5 10 54% 57.7

Johnson was given $1.95 million over two years to be a No. 3 quarterback. That was before the Giants drafted Davis Webb.

Kaepernick vs. T.J. Yates

2016

Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Yates 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Yates 7 4 1534 6 8 58% 72.8

Yates will have to contend with Cardale Jones and Nate Peterman or hope the Bills hold on to four quarterbacks in order to keep his $815,000 salary.

Kaepernick vs. David Fales

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Fales 0 0 22 0 0 40% 53.8

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Fales 0 0 22 0 0 40% 53.8

Fales has a job and Kaepernick doesn't. Fales' employment with the Dolphins may not last past the summer as Miami also has Matt Moore and Brandon Doughty behind Ryan Tannehill.

Kaepernick vs. Case Keenum

2016

Player Starts Wins Yards TDs INTs Comp Pct QB rating
Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Keenum 9 4 2201 9 11 60% 76.4

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Keenum 24 9 5224 24 20 58% 78.4

The only stat in which Keenum was better than Kaepernick in 2016 was in team wins. Keenum, also 29 years old, signed a one-year, $2-million deal to act as depth for the Vikings with Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater in tow.

Kaepernick vs. Matt McGloin

2016

McGloin 7 1 1868 11 11 58% 75.3

McGloin was brought aboard after Foles to back up Carson Wentz as the sophomore hopes to improve on a promising rookie season. McGloin earned $800,000 on the deal.

Kaepernick vs. Matt Simms

Buried behind Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub, Simms is purely insurance.

Kaepernick vs. Jake Heaps

Property of the Seahawks, Heaps is a free-agent signing. Kaepernick is not.

Kaepernick vs. Blaine Gabbert

Kaepernick 11 1 2241 16 4 59% 90.7
Gabbert 5 1 925 5 6 56% 68.4

Kaepernick 58 28 12271 72 30 59% 88.9
Gabbert 40 9 7351 38 37 56% 71.5

Finally, the latest quarterback to ink a deal for the 2017 season is the man Kaepernick supplanted for a starting role last season. Gabbert was handed a one-year, $900,000 contract by the Cardinals. Would Kaepernick have been open to a backup role and a contract similar in money and term in order to secure a job this season?
