Harvey apologizes: 'I was out on Friday night'

The Matt Harvey drama may be drawing to a merciful close after the New York Mets starter apologized to his teammates, then apologized publicly at a press conference prior to the team's game Tuesday.

"Obviously, I'm extremely embarrassed by my actions," Harvey told reporters. "I apologize to my teammates, to the Mets organization, the Wilpons, all the way down to the Mets fans for doing what I did. Yes, I was out on Friday night past curfew, and did play golf Saturday morning."

Harvey said he is "looking forward to getting things back on track and doing everything (he) can to help (the Mets) win and help this organization get back on track."

The Mets have won seven of their last 10 games, a run that has them hovering just one game under .500 for the season.

The Harvey saga began Saturday, when he didn't show up to a Mets game. When the pitcher arrived Sunday morning - on his scheduled start day - he was informed by team staff that he'd be suspended three days without pay for his transgression. New York started Adam Wilk in Harvey's place.

Harvey had reportedly told Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen that he had a migraine and wouldn't be able to attend Saturday's game following a golf game earlier that day. The team sent security staff to Harvey's place that evening to check on him, and the one-time All Star reportedly answered the door in his pajamas. The following morning, Harvey was officially suspended.

Mets manager Terry Collins opted to comment on the issue as little as possible, but conceded that he wanted Harvey to apologize to his teammates - a charge that was met with Tuesday's press conference.

Harvey told media that he hadn't yet filed a grievance against his employer, but suggested it was still an option, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
