Vardy: The last time I lifted a weight was a can of Red Bull the other day

In an era when players' diets and training regimes are controlled to the most minute detail, it appears Jamie Vardy is bucking a trend.

The Leicester City and England striker was pictured with an energy drink and a tin of chewing tobacco on his way into training on Tuesday, and Vardy has unashamedly admitted that weight-training isn't for him.

"If I go in the gym it will slow me down," insisted the svelte former non-league player. "I don't go in for weights or anything like that. Each and every person is different and this is my way, and I'm sure if someone else tried doing what I do then it probably wouldn't work for them."

Vardy enjoyed a Friday off training with his wife Rebekah, a day after he scored on his international tournament debut 11 minutes after his introduction from the bench.

He confessed that several managers have attempted to get him pumping iron, but their efforts haven't been successful.

"Yeah, they've tried and not succeeded. The last time I lifted a weight was probably that can of Red Bull the other day."

The former Fleetwood Town goal plunderer was caught with a piece of chewing tobacco under his top lip during a match against Manchester United last month, and also says a can of Red Bull is just an occasional vice.

"It's just something I've always done and they've been checked with the medical team, and there's nothing wrong with (chewing tobacco)," Vardy said after Thursday's 2-1 win over Wales.

"I wouldn't call it a diet, the Red Bull was just to wake me up in the morning. It's just standard (to) me, a bit of Red Bull. It's not a regular thing whereby I have a Red Bull every morning. It's just something I felt I needed that day."

Vardy will hope his impact off the bench last time out will earn him a start in England's next outing: Monday's trip to Saint-Etienne to face Slovakia.
