Missouri's Keyon Dilosa says Maty Mauk is clean, drug video is old
Missouri suspended quarterback Maty Mauk on Monday after a video surfaced of him appearing to snort a line of white powder at a house party, but that clip is actually two years old and he's since addressed his drug issue, according to teammate Keyon Dilosa.
"I just want to start by saying that what was done in the video is not right by any means, but the fact that it was brought up years later should raise questions," Dilosa said in a statement posted to Twitter. "Maty made a mistake and everyone has made mistakes in their lives, he's still growing just like each of us on this team and on this campus."
Mauk's suspension marked his third since the end of September. Multiple sources confirmed the first disciplinary action was for a failed drug test, resulting in a four-game absence. The second was for a dispute outside a local nightclub that resulted in a ban for the rest of the season.
"Maty learned his lesson and has been clean for a while now," Dilosa said. "Being a collegiate football player means that you are in the public eye always, people want you to be the bad guy and it just so happened that someone had that video from years ago and could release it at any moment and potentially ruin one of my family members' lives."
The troubled quarterback's hair is much longer in the video than his current haircut, lending credence to the argument that the clip is from a previous time.
New head coach Barry Odom and athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a statement Monday that the program had decided to suspend Mauk indefinitely.
"We are currently gathering information regarding the video in question. This is an issue we take very seriously and one that will not be tolerated within our program. We will take the appropriate actions once we have all the facts. In the interim, Maty Mauk has been indefinitely suspended for the Mizzou football program."
If the video is indeed two years old, that could lead to a swift reinstatement for the junior pivot.
