Minnesota's Peter Mortell awards himself fictional Big 10 'Holder of the year'
NFL Network broadcaster Rich Eisen has been very active with his "Punters are People too" campaign highlighting one of football's lesser-known positions, but the job of holder in the place-kicking game remains a barren island void of any recognition, unless things go wrong.
Minnesota's Peter Mortell is doing his best to change that.
The Big 10 handed out their annual awards on Tuesday and the senior punter took to Twitter to recognize a category the conference doesn't honor, Holder of the Year.
The inaugural winner of Mortell's award? The 22-year-old himself.
Thanks to Mortell's expertise with the ball, Minnesota kicker Ryan Santoso hit 15-of-19 field goals and all 30 extra-point attempts in 2015. Thanks to Mortell's sense of humor, we have a fantastic new award.
