Former USC QB Max Wittek benched as Hawaii's starter
The long and eventful college football career of Max Wittek took another turn Thursday, as new Hawaii coach Chris Naeole announced he's benching the USC transfer for Ikaika Woolsey.
Wittek - the third-ranked pro-style quarterback in the country - committed to USC in 2011, and drew the ire of many for a victory guarantee prior to his first career start against Notre Dame in 2012. The Trojans would lose with the then-freshman throwing two interceptions.
The 22-year-old would then lose the starting job to Cody Kessler prior to the 2013 season, and would eventually transfer to Hawaii in 2014.
His tenure with the Rainbow Warriors has been rocky, with the team struggling to a 2-7 record and Wittek throwing 13 interceptions. When coach Norm Chow was fired earlier this week, the writing was on the wall for the California native.
Woolsey started for Hawaii last season, throwing for 2538 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He has appeared in five contests this year.
