Promoter proposes 1st-ever 'Irrelevant Bowl' for CFB's worst teams
A sports promoter is hoping to introduce a new bowl game this year featuring the two worst teams in college football.
Roy Englebrecht, a boxing and mixed martial arts promoter based in Newport Beach, California, announced Wednesday that he plans to petition the NCAA to grant a waiver allowing for the launch of the "Irrelevant Bowl" in 2024. The name is inspired by the "Mr. Irrelevant" title given to the last player selected in the NFL draft.
"No polls, no rankings, no controversy, just two winless or near-winless teams looking for redemption and one elusive win," Englebrecht said in a statement. "Knowing that the NCAA has become more flexible with the number of team's wins to qualify for a bowl, I will petition the NCAA asking them to grant a waiver in 2024 so that two teams would be eligible to play in the inaugural Irrelevant Bowl."
However, it doesn't sound like the NCAA is too keen about Englebrecht's idea.
Brett McMurphy of Action Network reports, citing sources, that there's "no chance" the NCAA would grant a waiver for a bowl game between college football's worst teams.
Had an "Irrelevant Bowl" existed for the 2023 college football season, it would've featured 2-10 Vanderbilt against 1-11 Kent State.
