Report: Baylor expected to name Shapen starting quarterback
Baylor is set to name Blake Shapen its starting quarterback for the 2022 season, a source told ESPN.
Shapen edged out last year's starter, Gerry Bohanon, for the role.
"It's been a strong competition, and I think the fight with these guys, I've been impressed," head coach Dave Aranda said after Baylor's spring game last month.
Shapen started two games last season as a redshirt freshman. He set a Big 12 championship game record with 17 consecutive completions in a win against Oklahoma State.
Overall, Shapen passed for 596 yards and five touchdowns while recording a 72.1% completion percentage in six contests during 2021.
Bohanon threw for 2,200 yards and recorded 27 total touchdowns across 12 starts last season. He missed the Big 12 title game due to a right leg injury.
Bohanon will enter the transfer portal to explore his options ahead of the 2022 season, according to On3.com's Matt Zenitz.
