Report: Transfer QB Gatewood to reunite with Malzahn at UCF
Former Auburn and Kentucky quarterback Joey Gatewood is headed to UCF after transferring from the Wildcats, reports Brandon Marcello of 247Sports.
Gatewood will reunite with Knights head coach Gus Malzahn, who coached him at Auburn in 2018 and 2019. Gatewood entered the transfer portal Monday after losing Kentucky's starting quarterback battle to Will Levis.
Gatewood, who still has three years of eligibility remaining, needs a waiver in order to play at UFC immediately. He won't receive the one-time transfer eligibility exception since he already moved from Auburn to Kentucky.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound passer appeared in six games for the Wildcats last season, making one start.
Malzahn joined UCF this year after posting a 68-35 record through eight seasons at Auburn. He helped the Tigers win one SEC title.
