Nebraska has appointed Trev Alberts as the school's new athletic director, the program announced Wednesday.

"It is such a tremendous honor to have this opportunity to lead Husker athletics," Alberts said, according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg. "UNL has incredibly talented coaches and student-athletes and a fan base like no other program in the country. The future of Big Red is bright. I can't wait to join the Husker athletics team and get going."

Alberts played for Nebraska from 1990-93 and turned in an impressive collegiate career. He won the Jack Lambert trophy in 1993 for being the nation's top linebacker and was drafted No. 5 overall by the Indianapolis Colts in the following draft.

Alberts served as the athletic director at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 2009-21 before rejoining the Cornhuskers in the same capacity.

He will be tasked with replacing Bill Moos, who served as Nebraska's athletic director for nearly four years before he surprisingly retired in June.
