Oklahoma finds 14 cases of coronavirus among football players

Oklahoma tested 111 football players for the coronavirus as the team returned to campus and found 14 total cases, the school announced Wednesday. That includes seven positive tests and what the university calls seven "positives that existed before testing."

Two of the students have recovered and 12 cases are considered active. Two of the 72 staff members tested also received positive results for the COVID-19 virus.

The Sooners began voluntary workouts Wednesday. Some programs reopened facilities in early and mid-June, but head coach Lincoln Riley said in May, "Our medical personnel have told us that the safest thing we can do is keep our players off campus for as long as possible."

The Oklahoma athletics department also announced Wednesday that it's implementing a budget cut of approximately $13.7 million due to the pandemic. Any employee salary of $1 million or more will be reduced by 10%.

"Our goal is to have all activities operate as safely and efficiently as possible," athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "That said, we are planning on a number of contingencies and protocols that will leave us prepared for any number of scenarios."
