Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley won't be fired following a review of a text message he sent in 2013 that contained a racial slur, the school announced Wednesday.

Previously, the Utes suspended Scalley indefinitely while looking into the matter. Scalley apologized for the text after it was referenced on social media, calling it a "terrible mistake" that was "offensive and hurtful to not only the African American community, but to all."

The program has withdrawn a verbal offer to make Scalley the "head coach in waiting," and his multi-year contract that was worth $1.1 million annually is being amended to a one-year contract for $525,000. Additionally, he will participate in education on diversity and inclusion.

Utah hired an external firm to investigate whether the text was an isolated incident or part of a pattern of behavior.

To whom Scalley sent the message remains unclear.
