Report: Kansas finalizing deal to hire Les Miles

Kansas is finalizing a deal with Les Miles that will make the former LSU honcho the Jayhawks' new head coach, sources told Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated.

An official announcement on his hiring reportedly could come over the weekend, barring a last-minute snag. The news comes a day after Miles agreed to settle his buyout with LSU, a possible sign that he was closing in on a new job.

Miles hasn't coached since the Tigers fired him four games into the 2016 season. He posted a 114-34 record at LSU and won a national championship to cap the 2007 campaign.

He'll inherit a Kansas program that has spent the last several years dwelling in the Big 12's cellar. The Jayhawks have won just six of their last 40 games, and haven't finished a season with more than three victories since 2009.

The charismatic Miles is known as an excellent recruiter but he figures to have a tougher time convincing high-level prospects to bring their talents to Kansas. The 65-year-old will also have to prove that the game hasn't passed him by. He struggled to develop quarterbacks and showed little willingness to adjust his offensive system in his final years at LSU.

Miles was first mentioned as a leading candidate for the Kansas job in early November after the program announced current head coach David Beaty would not be retained for next season.
