It might not happen in the near future, but it appears the once-heated rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M is on track to eventually resume.

The two powerhouses from the Lone Star State haven't met on the football field since the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC after the 2011 season, but Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte gave hope to both fan bases with his comments on Wednesday.

"At some point and time we will pick up our rivalry," Del Conte said at the Big 12 spring meetings, per Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News. "It's important to our state and important to our fan base. I'm assuming when it's appropriate and ready, we'll play ... we'd like to do that, it's just matching up schedules."

While the schools continue to play each other in a number of other sports, the difficulty of football scheduling has made it nearly impossible to find a date that suits both programs.

Both schools already have marquee non-conference matchups scheduled for each of the next few seasons, so the rivalry may need to resume even further down the line.

"You never know how things will happen, but right now we're pretty booked out," Del Conte added.

The Longhorns hold a massive edge in the 118-meeting history between the teams, sitting with a sparkling record of 76-37-5.
