Pepsi to limit blue branding at Utah because of BYU resemblance
There are rivalries, and then there's Utah-BYU.
The Utes will soon switch to Pepsi from Coke as their official beverage, but with a bit of a twist: Pepsi's royal-blue background will be absent from branding around campus because of its similarity to BYU's shade of blue.
"We never asked Pepsi to remove blue from their logo - never a discussion on that," Utah auxiliary services contract manager Brett Eden told Josh Furlong of KSL.com. "But what we did ask and collaborate with them on is that we develop a concealment that's conducive to campus, which means a little flexibility from Pepsi and a little flexibility from us. These co-branded machines and the artwork will include a Pepsi logo - their red-and-blue logo - but the backgrounds will be different."
The Pepsi and Utah logos will be featured on signage without the typical blue background. Code Red Mountain Dew will also be displayed around campus, with a "heavier lean" toward the Utes-matching product at venues on game days.
Eden added that this type of leniency with branding is rare for Pepsi.
The new campaign starts July 1.
