Stoops: Mixon would be dismissed if punch happened today

A few days after the graphic video from 2014 showing Oklahoma's Joe Mixon punching a female student was released to the public, head coach Bob Stoops says he would've dismissed the running back had the incident happened today.

Stoops and athletic director Joe Castiglione were two of the limited number of people who saw the video following the incident. They decided the best punishment for Mixon was to suspend him for his freshman season.

"Two-and-a-half years later it's fair to say (the punishment) isn't enough," Stoops said during a press conference. "It's positive that the way things have gone in the last two-and-a-half years that the only acceptable way now is dismissal. We didn't go that route two-and-a-half years ago. We thought a young man deserved an opportunity moving forward to redeem himself and be positive in the community."

Mixon came to Oklahoma as the sixth-ranked running back in the country for the class of 2014. He was ranked by ESPN as the Sooners' top recruit for that class.

Stoops admitted that when the punishment was levied, the administration expected the video to be released shortly afterwards.

"We fully expected when we made our decision to what Joe's discipline would be that the video would be released within a few weeks," Stoops said. "I wish the video had been released immediately because the world is a different place two-and-a-half years later ... and that's a positive."

Stoops did say Mixon hasn't made a decision about whether to head to the NFL or return to school for another season, and he'll likely make that call after the Sooners face Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.
