LSU AD: Florida game 'is not going to happen'
Saturday's game between LSU and Florida was postponed indefinitely Thursday due to Hurricane Matthew, but the Tigers athletic director isn't exactly optimistic about a rescheduled date.
Joe Alleva was on ESPN 104.5 in Baton Rouge on Friday morning, and delivered some sad news for those hoping the game would eventually be played.
"The game is not going to happen," Alleva said. "LSU made every effort to play the game, offering for them to come here. We offered for our young men to get up very early on Sunday morning and fly to play the game. We would have done anything to get the game in."
One idea floated to make up the game was for both schools to cancel a remaining non-conference game this season, since both have one scheduled for Nov. 19. Florida offered to cancel that contest against Presbyterian, but LSU wouldn't do the same for its game against South Alabama, a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy on Thursday. Alleva vehemently refuted that report.
"That is a flat-out lie. Nobody has contacted me," the ninth-year athletic director said. "That's a perfect example of terrible journalism. He didn't call me, he didn't call anybody, he just tweets out that garbage. That's an absolute lie."
Both teams are now off until Oct. 15 when the Tigers host Southern Miss and Florida hosts Missouri.
