Buechle's father has 'incredible experience' at son's Texas debut

Steve Buechele played in the Major Leagues for 10 years and is currently the bench coach for the Texas Rangers, but Sunday night still may have topped every experience he's had in professional sports.

Buechele wasn't at Globe Life Park in Arlington Sunday, instead he was heading to Austin, Texas to watch his son Shane Buechele not only start for Texas, but lead the Longhorns to a 50-47 double-overtime win over Notre Dame.

Monday, the senior Buechele was back at his job up in Seattle, but was still reflective on what he witnessed his son do in Austin against the Irish.

"It was an incredible experience," Buechele told Evan Grant of Dallas Morning News. He added, "I need to watch the game again to take in what happened. All we had was the roar and the noise."

Shane became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for a Longhorns season-opener since Bobby Layne did so in 1944. Afterwards, Steve said his son acted like knocking off No. 10 Notre Dame was no big deal.

"He's soaked in sweat. Comes out says 'Hey pops, what's up?' Just so typical if you know Shane," said the Rangers coach.

The evening seemed to have it all for the Buecheles, as prior to the game, Shane switched jersey numbers from No. 16 to No. 7.

The significance? Steve attended Stanford, and his roommate was John Elway, who also wore No. 7.
