Five-star recruit Bryce Thompson announced his commitment to Kansas on Tuesday.

The combo guard is ranked 25th on the ESPN 100 for 2020, and he's the Jayhawks' first marquee prospect in next year's class.

Oklahoma State, North Carolina, and Oklahoma were also pursuing Thompson.

"(Kansas head coach) Bill Self made a great pitch to me on how I can fit into the system and how (Devon) Dotson is more than likely going to leave so that’s going to be opening the point guard position and be a place where I can come in and make an immediate impact and win at a high level," Thompson told Eric Bossi of Rivals.com

Self coached Thompson's father in the 90s, and he's maintained a relationship with the family over the years, which Thompson says "factored in a lot" to his decision.

"My dad is in my corner," Thompson told Evan Daniels of 247Sports.com. "He's telling me everything about the coaches and how they were good to him and so it was a big part."

"He said (Self) is going to push you," Thompson added. "He's going to make sure he gets every last drop out of you. But at the end of the day, he's going to love you like a son."

The Jayhawks remain in contention for a number of five-star 2020 recruits, including Jalen Green, Makur Maker, and Cameron Thomas.
