The Detroit Pistons' search for a new head coach has reportedly led them to the university some 40 miles down the road.

The Pistons interviewed Michigan coach John Beilein for their own vacant position Thursday, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Beilein, 65, has been a head coach at the collegiate level for the past 26 years, and with Michigan for the past 11. In those 11 years, he's led the Wolverines to two Big Ten Conference championships and eight NCAA tournament berths, including two trips to the national title game: one in 2013 and the other this past season.

Before taking over the Michigan program, and following a 17-year high-school coaching career, Beilein coached at Canisius, Richmond, and West Virginia. He has compiled a 541-318 record in the NCAA. He hasn't coached in the NBA, but has long harbored a desire to do so, according to Wojnarowski.

The Pistons, who parted ways with Stan Van Gundy at the end of the 2017-18 regular season, have also reportedly interviewed TNT analyst Kenny Smith and former Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey for the job.
