Victor Oladipo on moment he was drafted: 'It was a crazy feeling'
ESPN has an excellent feature on the life of Victor Oladipo, and how his basketball career was shaped over the past few years. The piece can be read here, but one of the highlights is the rookie's reaction to being drafted second overall.
Throughout high school, Oladipo was playing behind his more polished friends and only in his senior season did people take notice of his basketball abilities. So when David Stern called his name at the 2013 NBA Draft, it was something of a blur for the 21-year-old.
"It was a crazy feeling," Oladipo said. "I was watching the draft for as long as I could remember. Watching people walk across that stage. To say that I just did that? There was no way.
"For me to be where I came from, I'm not supposed to be here. And with all the guys I used to hang around with? I was not supposed to be the first one."
Oladipo's father, who had always been reluctant to support his son's basketball career was also at the draft, and it proved to be an emotional moment when the Magic selected him.
"All I did was stand up and salute back to my dad," Oladipo said. "It was a special moment. All my friends and my family were in the same area. All I could do was smile. There were no tears then. I was too happy."
The Magic and Oladipo will start their regular season on Oct. 29 against the Indiana Pacers.
