Report: Bucks to interview Spurs' Becky Hammon for HC role

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Bucks intend to interview San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon for their head coaching job, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Hammon, 41, became the NBA's first female assistant coach when she joined Gregg Popovich's staff in 2014. She's now slated to be the first woman to interview for an NBA head coaching gig.

The six-time WNBA All-Star was reportedly considered a top candidate to take over as head coach of Colorado State before withdrawing in March in hopes of coaching an NBA team.

Hammon joins a candidates list that reportedly includes Steve Clifford, Mike Budenholzer, David Fizdale, Monty Williams, David Blatt, Joe Prunty, and fellow Spurs assistant Ettore Messina, with interviews beginning this weekend.

Wojnarowski noted that Hammon isn't considered a front-runner for the position, but that she intrigued the Bucks enough for them to request permission from San Antonio to interview her. Milwaukee previously met with the WNBA's eighth all-time leading scorer in 2017 for its GM vacancy, although Hammon didn't have any front office experience.

The Bucks finished seventh in the East this season and feature one of the best players in the game in Giannis Antetokounmpo. They fired former head coach Jason Kidd in late January, with Prunty then serving as the interim coach and guiding Milwaukee to a 21-16 record and a first-round playoff exit.
