Kawhi Leonard opts out of Olympics
San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard has joined the long list of All-Star talent taking a pass on this summer's Olympics for Team USA.
The reigning two-time Defensive Player of the Year announced his withdrawal from consideration for the international competition in a brief statement on Thursday. Leonard didn't provide a reason for his decision, but he is expecting his first child in July.
"This was a very difficult decision," he said. "It's an honor to have been considered for the team and I hope that in the future I will have the chance to represent my country by playing for USA Basketball."
Leonard also withdrew from Team USA the last time he had a chance to compete internationally, pulling out of the 2014 FIBA World Cup after winning the championship and Finals MVP with the Spurs.
