Jon Jones in a segregated prison cell 'for his own protection'

Tommy Gilligan / USA TODAY

Jon Jones' celebrity status helped keep him out of trouble through his first night in jail.

Officials from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Bernalillo County, N.M., told TMZ Sports that the former UFC light heavyweight champion is in a segregated cell after he was arrested on Tuesday for violating his probation.

"It's for his own protection," an official said.

In an unfortunate coincidence, Jones had appeared as a speaker at the detention center a few months ago as part of his court ordered community service that he received from a plea deal for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident last April.

TMZ Sports also reports that Jones has been a "model inmate."

Jones is scheduled to meet with a judge on Thursday morning.
