Report: New York Red Bulls star Matt Miazga set for Chelsea switch
It's been a busy Wednesday for Chelsea as the club rid itself of Brazilian midfielder Ramires and is set to sign Brazilian boy wonder Alexandre Pato. But, behind the scenes of these blockbuster moves, another deal looks close to being completed, too.
New York Red Bulls' star central defender Matt Miazga is set to complete a move to Stamford Bridge and join Chelsea within the next 24 hours, a source told ESPN FC.
Miazga, 20, was a standout newcomer last season with a dominant Red Bulls side, breaking his way into the first team from the club's academy and earning plenty of praise for his consistent performances. The Polish-American received U.S. men's national team interest midway through the year and joined Jurgen Klinsmann's team for January training camp, too.
But according to ESPN FC, Miazga has left USMNT camp and is en route to London where he will complete his medical and join the Blues for a reported $5 million.
Chelsea would be acquiring a player who not only fills a need - the club has been adamantly chasing central defenders like John Stones for the last 12 months - but also address a position without having to use an international roster spot; Miazga holds a Polish passport.
He made 26 appearances last season with the Red Bulls, and also appeared in all four of the team's playoff matches. He scored one goal in 2015 and recorded two assists.
