Conflicting reports surround Giovinco's exit from TFC camp

Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco left preseason training camp in California on Sunday and a transfer is in the works but not yet completed, sources told Joshua Kloke of The Athletic.

However, a TFC representative revealed to Jeff Carlisle of ESPN FC that Giovinco left camp Monday to see a doctor in Los Angeles regarding a leg injury. The Italian is expected to return to camp later in the day.

Toronto has not received an offer for Giovinco, who has been linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal FC, according to Carlisle.

The 32-year-old Giovinco, who's entering the final year of his current contract, has stated a desire to continue playing in Toronto but was unsure if an extension would be a possibility.

"I don’t know if it will happen or not, but I would love to stay in Toronto," Giovinco told reporters earlier this month. "I don't know for them it's the same. I will see in the next month."

Giovinco joined TFC in January 2015 and became one of the most successful players in MLS history. He's scored 68 goals in 114 games, was named league MVP in 2015, and led Toronto to the MLS Cup title in 2017.

However, after missing the playoffs following a difficult 2018 season, Toronto FC's already seen several key players leave the roster in recent weeks. Victor Vazquez was sold to Al Arabi in Qatar, Nick Hagglund was traded to FC Cincinnati, and Gregory van der Wiel was sent home from training camp and announced he was leaving the club following a reported clash with head coach Greg Vanney.
