Collins: My wife disagreed with Familia's usage in Game 4

Terry Collins' bullpen management came under scrutiny Saturday night when he opted against using closer Jeurys Familia for the final six outs of Game 4.

With his New York Mets clinging to a one-run lead over the Kansas City Royals, Collins called on Tyler Clippard to begin the eighth inning. The Mets set-up man retired his first batter before issuing back-to-back walks and putting the go-ahead run on first base.

Collins then brought in Familia, who induced a ground ball from Eric Hosmer that trickled under Daniel Murphy's glove, and the rest is World Series history.

"Again, it's easy to sit back and say, 'You should have done this after it didn't work.' Let me tell you something, we did that same scenario almost - when we got Tyler Clippard and Addison Reed, we went 7, 8, 9. We won a lot of games using that scenario, and last night it didn't work," Collins said prior to Sunday's potential elimination game.

Collins explained his decision to reporters following Saturday's loss, suggesting that pitching Familia in the Mets' 9-3 victory Friday may have contributed to his closer's Game 4 struggles. While Collins said he was "crucified" in Los Angeles for using Familia for six outs in the NLDS, the most hard-hitting criticism Saturday may have come from his own household.

"Debbie told me that on the way home, 'Why didn't you bring in Familia last night?' I said, 'Where were you when the decision was being made?' 'I was getting a taco.' So it's really simple, but it's not. Because we know we've got to play tonight, and if he goes two last night, that's back-to-back and I probably may not have him tonight."

With the Mets' season on the line Sunday, Collins said he won't hesitate going to his closer for a third straight night. As for whether Familia is available for a six-out save? Collins left no doubt.

"Yes," he said.
