The Chicago Cubs signed right-hander Trevor Cahill to a minor-league deal and assigned him to Triple-A, the Iowa Cubs announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old began his season with the Atlanta Braves and was demoted to the bullpen after losing his first three starts. His season didn't get better from there, and the Braves released him with an ERA of 7.52 over 26 1/3 innings of work.
Cahill won at least eight games in each of his first five major-league seasons, but has only won three decisions in his past 20 starts, going back to the start of 2014.
