Rays' McClanahan won't return this season after surgery
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan won't take the mound in 2025 after undergoing surgery Monday in an attempt to fix the nerve issue that's held him out all season.
McClanahan was placed on the 60-day injured list in April with the nerve issue, and was also shelved during spring training with a triceps injury. The 28-year-old was hopeful to return at some point this season after missing the entire 2024 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
"(The doctor) is not sitting there saying, 'He's fixed.' That's not the case. It's, 'This is one step, and we'll see how this goes.' And hopefully we get good results," Rays manager Kevin Cash said, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. "And if we don't, then let doctors decide what else is needed, if anything."
McClanahan established himself as one of the top starters in the majors before injuries derailed his ascent. The lefty is 33-16 in his career with a 3.02 ERA, and finished sixth in American League Cy Young voting in 2022.
The Rays enter Monday's tilt with the Athletics at 57-62, 5.5 games back of a wild-card spot.
