Elias apologizes to Orioles fans after breaking up roster
Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias apologized to the team's fans after trading several players before Thursday's deadline.
"We are sorry that 2025 has gone this way," the executive said, according to MLB.com's Jake Rill.
Elias added: "We're in a much better spot than we were one month ago. ... There's bright stuff ahead. We hope that this misfortune passes, and we get back to where we expect and need to be moving forward."
The Orioles dealt Ryan O'Hearn, Charlie Morton, Ramón Laureano, Ramón Urías, Seranthony Domínguez, Gregory Soto, Bryan Baker, and longtime center fielder Cedric Mullins after a terrible start to the campaign left them too far outside the playoffs to be buyers.
Many of the players Elias traded were on expiring contracts, and he said he wanted to capitalize on their value.
"We don't want to be selling this year. A lot has gone wrong to put us in that place. But once we're here, let's make the most of it, let's get the most talent back," he said, according to The Baltimore Banner's Andy Kostka.
Elias expressed faith in the Orioles' core, which includes talented players like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Jackson Holliday, and said he's optimistic the club will contend in 2026, according to the Baltimore Sun's Jacob Calvin Meyer.
The Orioles enter Friday with a 50-59 record, having gone 29-23 since the beginning of June.
