The New York Yankees acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies for pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, the clubs announced Friday.

The Yankees have been looking for help at the hot corner and had reportedly been eyeing McMahon for weeks. New York was also interested in Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, but there was a gap in trade talks, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

McMahon fills a defensive void for a New York team that's been error-prone of late, as he sits in the 91st percentile for outs above average. The left-handed hitter is slashing .217/.314/.403 with 16 home runs and 35 RBIs this season, but his 127 strikeouts are the most in the National League. The 30-year-old is also under contract through the 2027 campaign and is still owed $32 million over the final two years of his deal.

He was an All-Star in 2024, hitting 20 long balls with a .242 batting average and .722 OPS. McMahon hit at least 20 homers in five of his last six seasons.

The Yankees were relying on Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas at third base in recent times, though neither impressed. Peraza owns a .147 batting average and a .446 OPS, while Vivas has a .164 batting average.

Herring was the No. 8-ranked prospect in the Yankees' farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old left-hander owns a 1.71 ERA with 102 strikeouts over 89 1/3 innings (16 starts) in Single-A this season.

Grosz, 22, has recorded a 3.85 ERA with 131 strikeouts across 121 2/3 innings (23 starts) between Single-A and Double-A in 2025. The right-hander was New York's No. 21 prospect.
