Red Sox to place Giolito on IL to begin season
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced right-hander Lucas Giolito will begin the 2025 campaign on the injured list.
"We're going to be tested right away," Cora said Thursday, according to The Boston Globe's Julian McWilliams.
Giolito was diagnosed with a low-grade left hamstring strain after he was removed from his spring start Tuesday. The pitcher isn't expected to be shut down from throwing, according to MassLive's Sean McAdam.
The 30-year-old said he felt "100% fine" after throwing Thursday, according to Audacy's Rob Bradford.
Giolito hasn't pitched a regular-season game since signing with Boston in January 2024. He underwent an internal brace procedure to repair his ulnar collateral ligament last March.
The Red Sox recently announced starter Brayan Bello will also begin the campaign on the injured list.
