Report: Cubs agree to minor-league deal with Garrett Cooper
The Chicago Cubs agreed to a minor-league deal, which includes a non-roster invite to spring training, with first baseman Garrett Cooper, a source told SportsGrid's Craig Mish.
The Cubs beat out the Boston Red Sox for Cooper, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Cooper split last season with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, hitting a career-high 17 home runs with 61 RBIs and a .724 OPS in 123 games.
The 33-year-old hit well against left-handed pitching in 2023, posting a .904 OPS with 21 RBIs in 112 plate appearances. He also posted four outs above average at first base last season and has experience in right field.
Cooper provides the Cubs with another option at first with Cody Bellinger reportedly agreeing to a three-year, $80-million deal Saturday. The left-handed hitting Michael Busch also plays first base and is on the Cubs' 40-man roster.
